A tour of Lombardy
A Call Me by Your Name filming locations tour takes us to Lombardy, in northern Italy. Beyond the region’s natural beauty, its centuries-old architectural heritage has long attracted visitors. Since autumn 2017, however, Lombardy has also become a destination — and a kind of pilgrimage — for fans of the film.
Few things demonstrate a film’s cult status more clearly than the number of people who travel specifically to see where it was shot. Although the novel on which the film is based is set on the Italian Riviera in Liguria, director Luca Guadagnino relocated the story to Lombardy, the region where he lives.
Following the film, step by step
The filming locations are precisely identifiable — sometimes down to the very cobblestones on which the two young actors were standing in a particular scene. Visitors search for the exact spots using photographs taken directly from the film frames.
The geography of the film is deceptively fluid. Villa Albergoni, where most of the story unfolds, is located in Moscazzano. When Elio and Oliver ride their bikes into town, they are in fact cycling through the streets of the neighbouring city of Crema, whose historic centre provided a more visually striking backdrop.
Later, Professor Perlman takes Elio and Oliver to Sirmione, on the shores of Lake Garda, where they encounter an archaeological treasure. At the end of the film, the boys travel to Bergamo, where their final journey together leads through the city and into the surrounding mountains.
